Before a burn out happens "Just Do It" take time for yourself
Nov 13 2011 09:58 PM Before folks say "I can't get away" I offer this invite. Every caregiver including myself try to do it all and succeed. The truth of this is we all gradually burn out and run down a bit. Before this happens and anything out of character comes about a "Mini- Getaway" is in order. You need not go far and even if its for only a few hours its better than not going. For my own "retreat" I'm taking a 2 night stay at a Plush Hotel where I'm just a phone call away if a situation should arise. My excuse is a bitter sweet one as Mom is having shoulder surgery which is the bitter leading to the sweet knowing she'll be in good hands I can hit the Hotel but visit her during the day. Make your plans and as the biblical quote says " JUST DO IT " before you end up in a state of burn out or worse a break down. All The Best, Earl H. |

Nov 14 2011 08:19 AM That's a great idea Earl. It's hard to be a caregiver for a loved one when you feel the need to stay by their side constantly. Getting away even for a few hours can help you recharge. However, don't use the getaway as an excuse to run errands. It really needs to be a refresher so that you can have the energy to be a more positive caregiver. Even if it's not a hotel, what do you do to get away for a few hours? |

Re: Before a burn out happens "Just Do It" take time for yourself
Nov 15 2011 09:10 PM When I'm not working I'm home taking care of Mom. When I'm not taking care of the house I'm on this computer or watching the "blunderbox" TV with Mom. My computer and a cherished night out every so often with the Scout Troop or My Mens Club are my reprieve. BUTT, That is not enough at times and as self serving as it may sound myself and caregivers need to get away and like you said running errands is just a extended part of caregiving. In all honesty I wouldn't trade my choice for all the money in Mr. Trump's bank account, lol As I type this it'll be at T - 35 days till intown R & R at the " Plush Hotel" You do no good if your suffering from caregiver burnout because when your in this state the odds of a mistake or worse a accident involving your family member can creep up when you least expect it. So, Be Careful Out There |
