Learning isn't just for kids! More and more, adults are taking advantage of courses and classes designed especially for adult learners. And there are plenty of other informal and low-cost ways to grow your knowledge.
From seminars that enrich your life, to staying informed on living a healthy lifestyle, to exploring favorite hobbies or pastimes, it's never been easier to be a lifelong learner.
Consider these accessible ways to expand your horizons and enhance your personal development.
- Go on guided tours or set off to sightsee. Visit landmarks and historic places with personal guides or guidebooks. Many tours are free or available for a nominal fee or donation. There are a wide variety of opportunities to see places or explore subjects, whether you're traveling or just being a “tourist” in your own hometown.
- Check out your local museums. Art museums, history museums, train or maritime museums…they're all readily available learning opportunities. Museum exhibits provide a great sense of discovery with a chance to observe artifacts up close and personal. Many museums offer lecture series presented by respected experts. Take your learning opportunities to a whole new level and consider volunteering as a museum attendant.
- Attend wellness seminars and screenings. Local hospitals frequently sponsor seminars to bring the latest medical information and health tips to their communities and many are free. Raise your health IQ on a wide range of topics including nutrition, stress management, exercise, and yes, incontinence. Learning everything you can about incontinence puts you confidently in control of your condition.
- Join a club. What's your passionate pastime or hobby? Chances are, there's a club or group focused on what you love. Getting involved in a club lets you learn from experienced members and gives you the chance to share your own expertise. Many clubs sponsor workshops, speakers or field trips to let you grow your interest or skills. Clubs are also an ideal way to cultivate your interest in a new hobby, too. Surf the net, ask friends, colleagues and fellow enthusiasts…search out a reputable group that shares your interest and join in!
- Give back. Learning and personal growth also happens when you're on the teaching side. Volunteer your talents, skills, knowledge and expertise to help others. Tutor students to read and speak English through your local literacy council, or mentor a young entrepreneur. Whatever your background or interest, apply your life experience to meet your community's needs.
Learn to speak a foreign language, improve your golf swing or computer skills, write your memoirs…whatever your dreams or desires, the opportunities to be a lifelong learner are boundless! Actively pursue knowledge and you will enrich your life.
