I guess it's time
Jan 23 2012 05:52 PM I have an enlarged prostate and have to pee dozens of times a day, often when I get to the toilet all I can do is dribble. At other times it's agonizing I have to pee so badly, like on a highway looking for an exit where there's a rest room and I'm writhing around in the driver's seat trying to hold it in. Sometimes I'm not entirely successful and some pee leaks out. Sometimes it pressures my bowel too and I've even (once) had a little mess in my underwear. So, I guess it's time to think about some kind of diaper. My wife has been telling me to wear one for a while but I've been kind of stubborn about it...I mean who wants to wear diapers? But it seems like it's the only solution (I've had allergic reactions to medication). The "Products" part of this website suggests Depends Super Plus which is kind of the 3rd most absorbent from what I can tell. What suggestions would the discussion group have for me? |

RE: I guess it's time
Jan 23 2012 07:14 PM Hi, Househubby. I feel your pain. I've had non-bacterial prostatitis and it is beyond aggravating. But which product is right for you will depend entirely on how you void and how much you void, both at once and in total. If you're just releasing a little at a time, you might get away with some of the underwear. But if you plan to release a little at a time several times throughout the day, consider something more absorbent. If you're trying to stick with Depend products, their adjustable underwear are surprisingly serviceable for that purpose. But if you're trying to hold your urine longer, and therefore may flood the . . . garment, you might try the full-on diaper. Because of the larger pad, these have significant advantages not only in absorbency, but in reliability in a variety of positions, including sitting down. Still, I wouldn't trust them for sleeping. Does that help? -RMS |

Jan 24 2012 09:32 AM I had a urinary sphincterotomy several years ago, which causes me to leak in frequent small amounts, with little or no control. If I understand your description accurately, your leakage is similar to mine. If I have ready access to a toilet, the KC men's underwear suits me fine. The heavier diapers should suit for longer periods away from toilet facilities. Experiment to see what works best for your situation. |

RE: I guess it's time
Jan 24 2012 11:48 AM I definitely appreciate that you don't like the idea of wearing a diaper. However, if your experience is like that of a lot of us, you'll find that wearing a diaper will eventually seem like a kind of liberation. Anxiety about visibly wetting you pants is a horrible feeling that makes people afraid to go anywhere and do anything outside their house. And even at home, having to go to the bathroom a dozen or more times a day is a very unpleasant nuisance. Wearing a diaper that is absorbant enough to prevent visible accidents means that you can pretty much go wherever you want to go and do whatever you want to do with reasonable peace of mind. When you do start to wear a diaper, you'll need to experiment a bit find a product that provides the security you need. This experimentation is probably best done at home or at least somewhere where you can quickly get to a bathroom and change when necessary. You should be able to find a product that with a capacity great enough to last you several hours so that you could go shopping with your wife, attend a sports event such as a hockey game (you can tell I'm Canadian), or go to a movie without having to worry about your leaky plumbing. I suggest that you try visiting some of the incontinence discussion sites that are not sponsored by a particular brand of incontinence product. You'll get more candid advice about what to try than you can find on a site such as this. Finally, when you start wearing a diaper, you will worry because you think people can tell you're wearing a diaper. Everybody worries about that at first. However, you can take my word for it and, if you look around what people say on this and similar forums, you'll see that eventually people come to realize two things. First, hardly anybody goes around looking for people that they can tell are wearing a diaper. People are so caught up with their own concerns that in fact hardly anyone ever notices. And second, if somebody should notice, how important is it? The important thing is getting out and leading a normal life. What someone might think if they should happen to notice that you're wearing a diaper really doesn't much matter. |

RE: I guess it's time
Jan 25 2012 11:54 AM Hi, thanks guys for the supportive replies! Last night we went out to a big super-drugstore that seemed to have a pretty wide selection of incontinent products and spent a while looking at all the choices (sure are a lot of products!) We opted for the Depends "Maximum" which I think is the next more absorbent one than the "Super-plus" and less absorbent than the "Overnight". I didn't wear one to bed because I wanted to get used to it in the daytime first, and so I am in one today. It's almost noon and I've peed twice in the bathroom but my diaper is also pretty wet. I can't picture going too much longer before changing it. We've decided that I'll start tonight with wearing one to bed, too. Someone mentioned other discussion sites...any suggestions? Thanks again for the help...I'll keep you all updated |

Jan 26 2012 11:24 AM Good luck with your diaper trials. Let us know how things are going. Depend does not permit the posting of links to other sites. Two sites to which I was referring are Yahoo groups. One is called AdultIncon; the other is called Icont. If you don't already have one, you'll need to get a Yahoo ID and then join the two groups. Another good web site not related to Yahoo is called Incontinentsupport. You can locate it with a Google search. |

RE: I guess it's time
Jan 26 2012 11:59 AM Hi Househubby, there are a lot of good suggestions here. I think that wearing protection, i e diapers, is much better than going without especially when it's needed. I can imagine that if there weren't all of these products available I would be much more restricted in where I go and would always be worrying about finding a bathroom. I don't have to find an excuse not to go somewhere. Thankfully it's not an issue now. As for others knowing about you're wearing protection; let's put it this way: If someone suspects then it's likely they have to wear diapers themselves. Otherwise, everyone else is worried about their own lives so they won't worry about what others use for underwear. Besides, wearing fairly loose pants is a good way to hide things. I wear jeans that are somewhat loose, but that's not to say wear baggy pants or else! So you can wear something comfortable and still disguise your protection. Also, there are a lot of supply companies on line so if something you get in the store doesn't really do it for you, then go online, find some companies, call them and ask for samples. I get my supplies from a company in Michigan who sent me various samples and I selected the ones I like the best. So good luck and hope you find something you like soon. |

Jan 27 2012 12:19 AM As miserable a condition as incontinence can be, I can not imagine what it was like 20, 30 or 50 years ago, when it was cloth and no other options... I am thankful now to at least have a really good selection of adult products to choose from for my needs. Cloth at night is great, I am a believer in that now, but not anything I could wear during the day outside of the house without it being so obvious to anyone behind me! There are at least a dozen good sites to order from, shipping can be an issue though, especially for those of us in Canada, Puffy |

Feb 10 2012 11:46 AM Thanks again for all the help everyone. I used up the Depends Maximums and have been trying some other different kinds (Molicare, Abena both of which seem to be mentioned a lot on here) My wife got me some "Fresh Sacks" for disposing of my diapers and some diaper rash cream ("Grandma El's"). Has anyone had problems with rash? There is a lot of opinion on here favoring cloth for overnight. Is there any special way that you have to wash diapers? How do you wash the plastic pants? I guess it takes time to find out what works for you in different situations. |

RE: I guess it's time
Feb 10 2012 04:01 PM The best suggestions I can offer as to, caring for or, washing and drying, cloth diaper and plastic pants; First and foremost NEVVER USE FABRIC SOFTENER as it will damage both plastic pants and absorbency of cloth. Plus, For Cloth diapers, Soak wet and soild cloth diapers until you can wash them. and again NEVER EVER use fabric softner even one time as it will reduce absorbency immensely. When drying if diaper has elastic or veclro on it best to line dry or use low-med heat setting on dryer. For Plastic pants, wash on warm-cold settings and line dry only and again without FABRIC SOFTNER. Also heres' a helpful hint; since I usually wash my plastic pants with other cloths and have a top loading washer I alway put pants in a lingerie bag to protect them from being damaged while being wash and the bags are great when it comes time to seperate, plastic pant and other items into either dryer and line drying items. Best of luck |

RE: I guess it's time
Feb 11 2012 10:20 AM With regard to diaper rash, I've found that an excellent way to avoid it is to clean myself thoroughly with a baby wipe at each diaper change. For me at least, it's best to avoid washing the diaper area with soap and water any more often than once a day. The baby wipes contain aloe or something that seems to be easier on the skin than soap and water. You're certainly right that many people recommend cloth diapers for night use. However, I find that a really heavy duty disposable such as an Abena X4 or Dry 24/7 is adequate and a lot less hassle than dealing with the laundry that cloth diaper generate. |

Feb 13 2012 11:42 PM Househubby, how are the diapers working out? i hope you are used to them now and feel more comfortable with them. It is a major adjustment, but you are hopefully better off now. i hope you physical problems are better with protection also. the pain is not worth it and letting the protection do its job is so much more comfortable. The only down side with giving in to incontinece is that, you can't go back usually once you give in. Retraining is an uphill battle usually not won. Quality of life is key, keep your head held high and enjoy life! |

RE: I guess it's time
Mar 07 2012 08:09 AM Thanks, Lynn, things are going better now. It definitely is taking time getting used to the diapers but I can see how eventually it will allow me a lot more freedom to do things I haven't been able to for a while. Right now, though, I still haven't gotten past the stage where I am very aware of being diapered and think a lot about planning when to change and also a bit self conscious when in public. I know it's silly and I'll get over it but it's where I am right now. Around the house and when a bathroom is available or for short errands I wear Depends "Super Plus Adjustable Underwear" because the elastic lets me pull them up and down when I can get to the bathroom. If I'm going to be out for any length of time I wear Moli-Care "Super-Plus" with plastic pants which I also wear for overnight but with a stuffer. Thanks Nick for the suggestion about wipes, what kind are best? I'm using Johnson & Johnson but also have a small travel pack of Pampers wipes that I haven't tried yet. No rash so far and I want to keep it that way! |

Mar 07 2012 08:30 PM househubby, Granted that you are very self-conscious now; we all were when wearing some kind of protection first became necessary. Give them time, and you will eventually feel relieved, even good, to allow your protection to do its work, so you can get on with more important things in your life. |

RE: I guess it's time
Mar 25 2012 08:42 AM I wear different types of protection depending on where I am and what I am doing. If I know I will be close to a toilet, sometimes I just use pads. Under normal circumstances I wear depends for men during the day, but if I know access to toilets could be a problem, then I wear a diaper. I always wear diapers at night. I know it is hard to get used to using protection, but it does allow you to lead a full life, not dictated to by where rest rooms are. I always try to use the toilet if at all possible, but it is reassuring to know that if I do have an accident, only I will know, and that my pants will stay dry. |
