25 year w/ old bladder problems

Dec 20 2011 06:14 PM

it started about 2 months ago with a weak stream, and the occasional feeling of not being empty, then maybe a month ago id get sudden urges and then then id have to get up maybe twice a night to use the restroom. last week i wet the bed, saw my doc, he said it could be a UTI and put me on cipro... I've had one dry night since last Thursday! seems like now i just cant keep my underwear dry? i have that tingling urge feeling almost constantly. then I'll get up to go ot the bathroom, and strain to get any out, then when i wash my hands I'll feel that "trickle" of a little pee escaping. I've been wearing guards, and it helps ALOT, bu ti really just want to know whats going on! its not normal for a 25yr old to wet the bed! i shouldn't be wearing depends at night, and pads during the day!

any advice?

From the sound of it you might just have a particularly extreme case of OAB, which is what I have (and I'm a couple years younger).

It sounds like the onset of incontinence. Keep on top of the doctors and the various tets they can run. They should also check for spinal problems blocking the signals to the bladder.

Hello Flyer,
A slight but not impossible cause may be BPH [Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia]
Below is a description that I found. I researched it after reading your symptom of weak flow. I hope the Benign portion is correct and nothing more.
All The best,
Earl H.

Urine flow with BPH.

As a man matures, the prostate goes through two main periods of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. At around age 25, the gland begins to grow again. This second growth phase often results, years later, in BPH.

Though the prostate continues to grow during most of a man's life, the enlargement doesn't usually cause problems until late in life. BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but more than half of men in their sixties and as many as 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH.

As the prostate enlarges, the layer of tissue surrounding it stops it from expanding, causing the gland to press against the urethra like a clamp on a garden hose. The bladder wall becomes thicker and irritable. The bladder begins to contract even when it contains small amounts of urine, causing more frequent urination. Eventually, the bladder weakens and loses the ability to empty itself, so some of the urine remains in the bladder. The narrowing of the urethra and partial emptying of the bladder cause many of the problems associated with BPH.

i was thinking spinal injury as well... i was seeing my provider for back pain as well... i frequently injure my back at work... he said that he didnt think their was nerve damage because i didnt have a shooting pain down my leg?

could be OAB, but would that cause leakage? bedwetting? i just seems to be graudally getting worse over the past two weeks.. like today i would get these sudden urges, now from days before id get these and nothing would happen, but now with the sudden urge i would get a quick spurt of urine, i'd run to the bathroom quick, then nothing at all? at night i'll wake up around 3-4 o clock, with a soaked pull up...

i'm worried. i just dont know what to do.

You may not have spinal cord injury but the chance of a pinched nerve from a disc out of alignment may cause your wetting dilemma.
It wouldn't hurt to seek a chiropractor to make sure your not dealing with 1 or more pinched nerves.
To this day my own wetting issues are in part from nerves that were left in what is called subluxation back in my early years from age 3 till age 5 or so before a well respected chiropractor corrected what a know nothing doctor called "he's just a naturally clumsy little boy".
In today's terms a second opinion is a good idea and from my own experiance a chiropractor may be able to supply a better answer for you.

Flyer: Yes, those can be definitely be symptoms. I started experiencing steadily worsening bedwetting issues around 11-12 after basically never having had a problem with that as a kid. A lot of what you've described in terms of leaking and sudden "false alarms" even after having gone (or tried going) sounds pretty much identical to me the last few years too.

Flyer,

I'm glad to see that you've been to a doctor. However, given your young age, unless the problems clear up pretty quickly and completely, i think that you need a thorough urological work up. The symptoms you describe would be expected in someone three times your age. For an old guy, they might be something that he would just have to live with. However, for a young guy like you, they should be dealt with aggressively to get a cure.

At your age I'm glad to see you didn't hide your incontinence and I'm Glad to see you went to your docror about it. But if, you are still experiencing incontinence of any type and there is an onset of new incidents of when and how you are experiencing incontinent episodes after taking antibiotics for the possible UTI I would strongly suggest you see your doctor again as soon as possible and if nessacary seek a second opinion from, a Urologist or, a Neuro specialist sooner than later. As your incontinence could be caused by a long list of things but is usually always a side effect of something and a GP can help, a Urologist can to rule out the list of Kidney, Bladder or Prostate issues and, a neurologist/neurosurgeon can rule out Nerve or Spinal issues that could be causing incontinence.
Good luck and I hope you have the answer to why you are having incontinence issues soon as knowing the cause makes working on solutions a lot easier.

Hi Flyer1987,

Thank you for sharing your story with us and thank you to the community for providing such wonderful support and advice ;)

The most important step is to keep talking with your doctor. Write down all of your questions and concerns beforehand so you do not leave any stone unturned. If you are unhappy with the diagnosis - ask to see a specialist. It is important to rule out any possible medical conditions so that you and your doctor may work together on the best way to treat and possibly cure incontinence. Even if treatment isn't completely successful, careful management will help you to become more relaxed, confident and in control. All of this begins by talking with your doctor and providing as much information as possible about your symptoms and your concerns.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

It sounds like protection is in order for now. PLease don't feel bad about needing or using diapers. it can be far more damaging to the system fighting back the spurting or large dribbles. Just keep working with the doctors but don't get to upset over struggling for now and stick with diapers. I knw they will come up with an answer soon and if not there are worse things in life than being in diapers.

looks like the doctor said it could of been kidney stones? small ones, that caused the urge incontence... she said not all of them would cause pain... she said that the bedwetting should stop in a week, if i still have it two weeks then she'll send me to a urologist, my urge incontence during the day has stopped, its been 2 days with my pad being dry, and last night i woke up dry.. had an MRI done the other day to check to see if it was related to back injury, didnt show anything. i've been using the tena guards during the day, and at night the depends pull up breifs. they work good, but i didnt like how when i stood up it hung down, and if i we heavily theyd leak... i thought id try something different so i got the depends with the 6 tapes, they hold alot better, but the noise they make! and when theyr wet it almost feels like they stick to your body, my wife almost made me sleep in the guest bedroom!
hopefully it stops..

I had the same problem a while ago. All the symptoms of an overactive bladder.
It turned out that I had a kidney stone that had lodged partway down the ureter and was blocking normal flow. My bladder was pushing hard to clear the blockage with some really strong and painful contractions.
One day at work the stone finally broke free and passed resulting in relief from all symptoms.

@Flyer- Sorry to hear it may be a kidney stone but at least you have an answer and happy to hearyour incontinence epeisodes seem to be reducing in frequency and amount. Good luck and i hope the stones break-up so they pass with little to no pain and put an end to your incontinent episodes.

Protection advice.
Looks like a gaurd is working during the day for you now and since your saying that, you're not experienceing major leakage at night might i suggest a Pull-up instead of the tape-on (diaper) for night use this might help with comfort level until the stones pass and hopefully your incon time is over.
