College aged and incontinent

Sep 20 2011 10:32 PM

I've been dealing with bladder and bowel control issues for quite a few years now but it seems to be getting worse. It's not commonly talked about, as you can imagine, amongst people my age (21). Just wondering if there was anyone else on here in a similar situation and if so, how do you deal with it?

Hi mra131,

While you are waiting for other members in your age group to respond, here is an article that may be helpful to you, "Young & Active & Incontinent: The Inspiring Story of Dave."

Thank you for sharing with the community!

It started for me at age 22. My first accident was right in the middle of a class, but nobody noticed.

I had accidents that stained the sheets in my dorm room and a horrible one right in the middle of campus once, about 500ml worth. So I totally understand.

If you don't mind my asking, what is causing your incontinence?

It's been decades since I was in university, but I went through it wearing diapers 24/7. My biggest challenge was finding a roommate who was understanding. However, once that hurdle was surmounted, things went fairly smoothly. I found that my fellow university students were a much more compassionate lot than my high school classmates had been.

I was hoping you would stop by, as I would be happy to help. Guess not; sorry, I'm not around much on this forum as it is (sadly) not very useful.

Know that a LOT of people your age have problems like this, more than you know.

Sorry, I've been busy with exams the past few days.

I've been evaluated but a cause is still lurking...I'd really like to chat with others around my age with this kind of experience, or who know people my age that have gone through this.

Hi,

I'm 24 and in college myself. Now incontinent for four years after a bad bladder infection which left me with overactive bladder problems. So, I can understand your issues with incontinence very much.

Would be nice to come get in touch with you and others who deal with incontinence in college. Just send me a message

Wout, Mra, you should be able to use private messaging if you become friends. If you have problems with the system, please let me know. It's been a bit wonky now and then.

Hi,

I'm 23. I've been wetting my bed ever since I was 12, and that's gotten to the point where it happens every night. I've also been dealing with day time leaking the last 3 years, normally when I cough or something but that's gotten steadily worse too. By now my room mate and almost everyone else important to me knows I need to wear diapers to bed (at least).

To be honest I didn't really do anything about getting treatment until I had a particularly frustrating accident leaving the bathroom a couple weeks ago. Now my new urologist has put me on Vesicare, which seems to be helping in the day. And Imipramine for night.. Which as far as I can tell hasn't done anything other than make me feel a lot less depressed.

It's been getting easier to deal with, but still a pain to change yourself when your soiled. I've taken to carrying two changes with me in my backpack when I'm on campus. What all do you use for protection?

I am 49 now but needed diapers 24/7 in college. College students are typically more mature than back in high school and will be supportive of your needs or limitations. Don't get stressed over needing diapers, but work toward the root cause and possible cure. In the mean time try to make the most of each day and enjoy your college experience. Diapers are not a crutch but a tool allowing you a more normal (restored) lifestyle.

You are not alone, I am back in college myself. I have been dealing with incontinence issues my whole life. Believe me most people don't even think about young people and incontinence.

Wow, I spoke too soon. The Imipramine was a nightmare. Memory loss, chronic drowsiness, emotional instability... And it didn't do anything about what it was actually prescribed for. Now I'm on the verge of failing bio because I found it IMPOSSIBLE to study. Ugh.

Yes it seems that the majority of the meds have wild side affects. There are a few people here that have found prescribed meds to help. I think overall though doctors are quick to write a prescription without thinking twice. (All) medicines have some drawback. Just listen to the disclaimers at the end of a TV commerical regarding the latest drug, wow!

Personally I will manage my own issue the way I see fit. Watching fluid intake, always being prepared, not scanning for the closest restroom and having my independence is enough for me.

This has easily been the worst 3 months of my life. I've had to withdraw from a class, take an incomplete in another and I'm not even sure about the others. I don't feel comfortable around the few people I did hang around either... I've been dealing with the most crippling depression now that I'm off that stuff and even putting aside the incontinence I don't want them to see me like this. I'm not sure how much of it has to do with my other issues and how much of it is chemical but it's really just beyond my ability to cope with. Maybe I should just take a semester off and work while I get some serious therapy...

I'm so sorry Antiflash that so many pressures are bearing down on you right now. If your university has a health center, maybe they can help with some suggestions for dealing with your depression at least. Stress and depression are such a vicious circle and both can exacerbate incontinence issues.

Please know that the community is always here to help and support. We can't physically be there for you, but we can listen.

Be safe and find time for sleep.
