Seeing the doctor
Jan 25 2012 03:06 PM I had my first appointment today where the doctor saw me in my diaper, and I survived. I knew I was nervous but I didn't realize how much until afterward when I was able to let go of the tension. I know that he is a urologist and he sees stuff like this all the time. I just don't know why I get so emotional about stuff like this. Being single I don't have the support many of you guys do. I hope next time will be a bit easier. |

RE: Seeing the doctor
Jan 26 2012 08:57 AM inconguy, I was glad to read that you survived your first urological appointment for your incontinence. These appointments are not for the squeamish, or for folks who are easily embarrassed. And the tests are worse. If you live alone, let us be your support system. Keep in touch. |

Jan 26 2012 11:29 AM I'm also glad that you have had an appointment with a urologist. Your nervousness is typical of the way most of us have felt about seeing a new doctor about incontinence. I also second the suggestion that we are here to support one another. So please keep in touch. |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 26 2012 12:06 PM Hi Inconguy, add me to the list of those who offer you support. I'd be squeamish about appearing in a diaper before a doctor but I'm sure the docs have all seen it before, along with a lot worse. The only thing I'd be concerned about is having them fast talk you into medication. From what I've read, bladder meds, such as those that have a more "drying" effect, aren't recommended for those with glaucoma. Although I haven't been diagnosed with glaucoma, I do have some increased eye pressure so I would not opt for medication, especially when I'm comfortable wearing protective underwear. By the way, I, too, live alone, so I can understand how it is. Please keep us posted. |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 28 2012 12:21 AM Yeah I learned the lesson about drugs too late. The doctor gave me some samples of Rapaflow, and I have to say I don't like the side effects. I should have known better... |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 28 2012 09:20 PM I take Rapaflo with no side effects, except now I don't have to cath as much. The side effect would be more loss of urine instead of retaining, this med does not dry you out as it is a med to relax the sphincter muscles. I took Flomax but needed a stronger med which is Rapaflo. My question is what side effects are you experiencing? |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 29 2012 01:04 AM I had to quit taking it. I was having severe headaches, and my testicles started to swell up and got very very painful. The headaches and swelling are gone but the pain is still there. I am a very active person and the past two days have been extremely uncomfortable. |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 29 2012 01:05 AM And, perhaps worst of all, my incontinence issues stayed the same, if worsened a bit. |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 29 2012 01:25 PM I could see how your incontinence would worsen for it relaxes those muscles. It is used more for retention and prostate issues. Sorry you had to endure the headaches and swelling. Has he tried you on the meds that tend to cause less urine leakage, such as Vesicare? I had tried all of those, and I compounded my problems by drinking twice as much as I had. It even gave me blurry eyes from drying me out too much, I could not take the side effects from them. Hopefully they will hit on a solution for your specific problems, best of luck! |

Re: Seeing the doctor
Jan 29 2012 10:19 PM No I haven't tried any other drugs and I am fine with that. Honestly, I am having some other health issues I would like to get in hand before tackling this. And it may be that these other things are contributors to incontinence. Either way this is probably the most manageable of the issues I have to deal with right now. |
