RE: bowel incont
Aug 26 2010 06:57 PM I have the same problem, Trish. Medicine won't help my problem because it is the result of the sciatica I have suffered with since 1997 which was caused by a vehicular accident that resulted in two slightly bulging discs in my lumbar spine. The pain got progressively worse until I simply couldn't stand it any more and I chose to try the steroid shots before back surgery. I have been pain free for the past two years. My doctor did not tell me about the side effect taking the shots involved until several months after, however, it wouldn't have changed my mind at that point. The doctor told me that that side effect was the fact that the sciatic nerve controls our sphincter muscles and that's when he asked me if I had been having trouble with controlling my bladder and anus. The most frusting thing about it is, the steroids masked the feeling you usually experience when you evacuate your bladder or have a bowel movement. I have tried using the various pads offered, to no avail. I'm now to the point that I'm almost convinced that I will never be able to wear regular underpants and must start using the Depends or a similar product on a regular basis. It's just a coincidence our names are the same. Trisha8438 |

RE: bowel incont
Aug 26 2010 07:24 PM I'm disabled and have been bladder & bowel incontinent for years now. We have tried many solutions. Different stuff has worked at different times. My medications. Mobility. All have played factors in this. Over the last 7 years its been diapers 24/7 for my bladder. The bowel issue is a bit more complicated. When you do your enema or suppository are you able to expel in the toilet? My nurse & family care givers have to help me with this and my changes. My nurse suggested different options. We have a rolling shower/toileting chair. Its made a huge difference. My nurse can get me ready then place me over the toilet to have my bm. Her is what I'm talking about - http:/ I still have accidents and some days a diaper is just the more practical solution for my bowel incontinence. How do I deal with it? I have good days & bad days. There's nothing like a bad bowel accident to make it a bad day. But life goes on. I have my family , My nurse. A few close friends. |

Re: Not able to control BMS
Aug 28 2010 05:41 PM I am a 47 yr old single woman with a total of 5 children, ages ranging from 24, 21, 16, 10, 8. Plus a grandson. I am not able to control my bowel movements at times. I am in remission from colorectal cancer stage 3. So had alot of surgeries and the tumor removed, they redid my colon several times. There are some days that I cant make it to the bathroom due to loost stools and they are some bad sometimes it brings tears to my eyes. I end up taking alot of sitz bath to help my sore bottom. And I put different creams on to help with the soreness. I have some good and bad days. In the beginning I was embarrassed about wearing the diapers but I am not anymore. My lil kids tell me before we go somewhere mom did u get your diaper bag I also start to be alittle incontienet(sp). So it helps with the depends. It is hard to get to a restroom right away. I am now just beginning wanting to go out to the stores etc. Its been very hard on me. The Depends are expenisve but not sure what else to try they only thing I wish I could find is diapers that are like baby diapers that have the velco on both sides which it would make it easier to take them off and on. I do miss my regular underwear. Now I have been told I have a blockage in my urinage passage so going to see the dr on Tuesday morning. I also weight 88 lbs and have been trying to put on the weight but everything I drink or eat starts the loose stools quickly. Any suggestions. Thanks Barbara |

Re: Not able to control BMS
Aug 31 2010 08:58 AM I've been bowel incontinent since injury during childbirth 5 years ago. It's definitely a blow to your self esteem and feeling like a woman to suffer from this. I manage pretty well with tranquility briefs when out of the house. If I'm out and have an accident usually I can change and continue what I'm doing. The worst is those times where it's not so solid, and those days are just miserable. I have mild IBS so when it flares up I can't go anywhere. |
