Sorting through the myths

Jan 19 2012 09:58 AM

Living with incontinence means that there can be some misconceptions for those that may not understand what you are going through. Getting to the truths as to why you live with this condition can help you and your loved ones. Here are some common myths.

1. Everyone will be able to tell that you are incontinent. With the different protection available such as our Depend® products and various treatments, you would be the only one that needs to know.

2. Staying active and keeping yourself healthy will prevent incontinence. While it is important, it is not a guarantee that it will stop incontinence from happening. There are other factors that can come into play such as having pelvic surgery.

3. Incontinence is a part of aging. In actuality, incontinence occurs if there is an injury or illness as the cause.

4. Incontinence is a disease. It's generally the result of other health conditions and can be treated under a doctor's care.

5. Surgery is the only option for incontinence. There are other options available such as doing kegel exercises or modifying your diet.

That's very true that nobody will know unless you tell them. It was also good to point out that the only way to know if your incontinence can be cured or treated is with the doctor's visit. So if you haven't done so, now is a good time to schedule an appointment. Thanks for the input!
