At-home disposal

Jul 27 2011 04:04 PM

I am relatively new to using Depends and am wondering about disposal methods. I live alone so really don't create a lot of garbage and besides, it's only picked up once per week. I wrap each diaper in a store plastic bag but the odor from the diapers accumulating in the larger garbage bag gets pretty bad after a few days. I can put the bag in the garage or outside but in the heat of the summer that just makes the problem worse. Does anyone have any ideas on how to cut down on the odor or have a better disposal idea?

Hello Shygramma,
Your disposal need is just a Ziplock Bag away to control the odors. Toss in a dash of baking soda for good measure and all will be well.

I concur with Earl, but even if you do not want to use zip-lock bags for each one, I sprinkle baking soda in the garbage can on a regular basis in between trash days. With the summer heat, that is more often than in the winter. Baking soda is a cheap source of reducing odors.

I use heaven scent bags i am not sure of there wed adress but i am sure if you google it will pop up but they sell blue pags that are LIGHTLY scented with large handles so they are easy to tie and because they are olny lightly scented they won't make a whole room smell like the bags i use them at work andwas worried wheni tried themif the bathroom would start to smell like the bags but the bags hold in odor i use them all the time

Most folks here aren't fans of diaper pails, per se, but Dekor makes a large capacity that is elegant by comparison to regular pails. Depending on how many you go thorugh, the medium size would work, too. I, personally, like having an easy - somehwat ecological - solution. They work great, although they are a bit pricey, completely control odor, so they can be put in closet or cabinet without worry. I use zip-loc bags when I travel.

I have found that the baby genies work very well. the one i have is no longer made. but my friends daughter had a new baby and says the new one are better. just an idea.
by the way i keep in next to the toilet and have no problem with oder. each pad is puch down and the shut the lid and turn 3 x's and your ready for the next time. when it is garbage night you push the button on the top and turn the top and it cut. then go to the botton and put your garabage bag and release the bottom and the all fall in to the bag. open up the top tiee a knot and push it down and you are ready to start all over again.
i do rinse it out and spray it.

I use a separate trash can in my bathroom with a lid and odor-blocking trash bags. Works great!!!

The odor control bags seem to be very popular. There are also the garbage bins with a snap close that look to be very useful for keeping the bags inside. Do you think scented or unscented bags are better at keeping odors under control?

I have the Dekor diaper genie and they are worth the expense. It keeps the house from smelling and they are easy to use and empty. The Dekor works well for adult diapers as well as baby diapers.
