Myth or Truth? Check Out These Bladder Basics

We don’t think about our bladders much, until they start leaking. Then we want facts, and fast! But there are lots of myths about what “normal” bladder activity is … and some of those myths need busting.

MYTH #1:   Bladder leakage is a disease.

TRUTH:  It’s not a disease. It’s merely a symptom, and often only a temporary one.

MYTH #2Bladder leakage is uncommon and unusual. 

TRUTH:  According to the National Association for Continence, 25 million adult Americans experience transient or chronic urinary incontinence.

MYTH #3:  Losing bladder control is just a normal part of aging.

TRUTH:  Aging does not cause a leaky bladder. Injury, disease, and other health issues are the commonest causes.

MYTH #4:  Drinking less water throughout the day can reduce leakage.

TRUTH:  When you drink less water, your urine becomes more concentrated and can actually irritate the lining of the bladder and urethra.

MYTH #5:  Kegel exercises are for women only. 

TRUTH:  Kegel exercises strengthen the muscles (in both women and men) that are used to stop urinating.

Myth #6:  Being overweight and bladder leakage are not connected

TRUTH:  Sometimes they are. Extra weight can put extra pressure on your bladder, which can then result in leakage. But the good news is that just a 5-10% weight loss can help relieve the pressure and help control leakage.

So those myths are (drumroll, please) … busted! But there are also truisms about bladder leakage worth noting.
