Can bladder training alleviate my leaks?

What is bladder training? How does it help reduce incontinence?

Bladder training is a form of behavior therapy that can be a useful part of the treatment for urinary incontinence. Bladder training refers to behaviors that your doctor will recommend to help you reduce the need to urinate frequently, including timed voiding (going to bathroom every two hours) limiting fluid intake, and exercises that increase pelvic floor tone. The goal is to increase the amount of time between emptying the bladder and the amount of fluid in your bladder at any given time. It helps to diminish urine leakage and the sense of urgency. Limiting beverages that increase urination, including caffeinated beverages, soda and alcohol is important as well as limiting fluid intake before bedtime. Good bladder habits can be achieved through bladder training and it will typically lead to improved bladder control. It works by helping to create normal voiding patterns, which would typically include three to four hours between voids (urination) during the day and not more than one trip to the bathroom during the night.
