Treating Incontinence with Botox
How does Botox help with incontinence and what is the process for getting it? I’m considering it, though I’m worried about the side effect.
Botox is already FDA-approved approved to treat overactive bladder. Botox is a neurotoxin that treats urinary incontinence. It damages the excitatory nerves to the bladder. The upside of Botox is that one injection can substitute for daily pills over a six-month period. Even if incontinence still occurs after six months, its intensity is typically significantly reduced, when compared to pill medications. (For example, the patient may experience three leaks in a day, as opposed to five). As with any medication or treatment, there is a risk of side effects. These could include recurring urinary tract infections or infections around the injection site, whereas pills have been known to cause urinary retention.
